Cooking up the Past!
In this assignment, students engaged in an introspective exercise that used food as a medium to tell personal stories. The task required them to recall a significant memory, such as a moment from childhood, a cultural ritual, a family tradition, or an experience of personal change—and translate it into a recipe. This was not just about cooking; it was about using the semiotics of food to explore and express emotions, histories, and identities.
Each student developed a recipe that was both literal and symbolic. They listed ingredients with precise measurements and preparation methods, but more importantly, they explained the symbolic weight of each ingredient. These ingredients served as metaphors, connecting the act of cooking to the layers of personal meaning and cultural background behind the memory. The cooking instructions were often written as narratives, blending steps of the recipe with storytelling. Students were encouraged to be poetic, reflective, or conversational—bringing their memories to life through the process of preparing the dish. This blending of culinary method with emotional depth turned a typical recipe format into a form of autobiographical expression.
To conclude the exercise, students cooked their recipes and brought them to class. As students presented their dishes, they also shared the stories behind them, allowing classmates to taste not just the food, but the emotion and memory that inspired it. This exercise emphasized food’s powerful role in holding memory and meaning, while also encouraging empathy, connection, and cultural exchange within the classroom.
