A Kitchen In Between

Having recently experienced the shift of migrating to a new country after marriage, the kitchen became a powerful metaphor for my transition. Back home, the kitchen was a sanctuary; an intimate space where I held both agency and privilege. It was a domain where no one intruded as I worked, a place of solitude and control. In contrast, my new reality introduced me to a communal kitchen—an unfamiliar, shared space that stripped away the comfort and privacy I once knew. This shift was not just physical but emotional, stirring feelings of displacement and vulnerability. This artwork explores my evolving relationship with the kitchen as both a physical and symbolic space. By juxtaposing elements from my older kitchen with those of my current one, I navigate the tension between memory and adaptation, solitude and community. It speaks to the intimate ties between place, identity, and the rituals of daily life that shape who we are.
